Why Some Military Veterans Prefer a Quiet 4th of July

Military veterans don’t always enjoy the noise and spectacle of fireworks on the 4th of July. Here are some other options for celebrating our nation’s birthday.

Some military veterans prefer a quiet 4th of July without fireworkds.

For those who have served in a war zone, the 4th of July with its big, noisy fireworks, bombs bursting in air, is not always an easy holiday to get through.

Our veterans love the fact that the country celebrates its birth. They appreciate the fact that we’re proud of those who have served. But the sudden sounds of fireworks can bring back stressful combat memories.

So it’s up to us to make the 4th a holiday everyone can enjoy. Here are a few ideas:

1)  A Cookout or Barbeque
Be sure to keep the personal fireworks centered around small things that are less noisy, like sparklers. Or plan a big noon meal for everyone without stressing about those who prefer not to be around fireworks.

2)  Movie Night
Summer is the time of blockbuster movies. And the evening of the 4th of July is a low attendance time, so it’s a great time to go.

3)  A Camping Getaway
Most wilderness areas don’t allow fireworks because of the wild life and fire hazards. Going on a family campout is an excellent way for families to celebrate a more serene 4th of July while enjoying some beautiful nature.

We always want to remember the great country we live in and the selfless sacrifices of our men and women who’ve served. With a little forethought, we can plan our celebrations around the needs of all our veterans.
