The Promise of Hope, Chapter 9: Love

Of all the keys to personal change that I’ve discussed in this book, none of them really would have had any effect on my life if it weren’t for the power of love, the ninth change key. Love made all the difference in my life. It made all the difference in my recovery and in how I changed and really saved my life.

Tanya Sargent married her high school sweetheart, Kenny. Kenny joined the Marines. Eventually, he was deployed to Baghdad, where he fought bravely until he was struck down by a roadside bomb and suffered a grievous head injury. He was returned to the United States. 

Tanya was frightened. She didn’t know how she could handle this. She didn’t know if she could handle it, and she didn’t know what she had to do to help her husband Kenny recover. 

What she discovered was the power of love, the power of love to heal. Nothing changes the world more powerfully than love. And that love changed her, it changed Kenny, and it changed the course of their lives. It’s one of the most incredible stories that’s ever been told in a Guidepost publication. 

Love played a crucial part in my story, probably the most important part. And it’s probably the most important thing in your life too. My recovery, my journey was guided by the love of my family, the love of my friends, and the love of God. And ultimately, my discovery that the love of God is ever-present, and it’s a force that can’t be resisted. That, in the end, was the most powerful force for change in my story. 

But it was a struggle to find that love and to discover it in my own life because I resisted the idea. I pushed back against it. But love is irresistible, and love will save us. It saved me.
