Honey: a sweet symbol of God's blessings

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.  —Psalm 34:8 (NIV)

The most wonderful thing happened to me recently involving honey. I needed it for a new recipe, and after searching my cupboard I realized I didn’t have any. I wrote it down on my shopping list, and when I was at the big-box store I wasn’t sure I could use an entire half-gallon. But the price was reasonable, so I made the purchase. As I set it in my cupboard, lo and behold, I found the small jar I’d been looking for earlier.

Two days later I had lunch with an acquaintance who, unbeknownst to me, kept bees. Thanking me for some advice I’d given him, he brought me two quart-size jars of honey. Then I spoke at a breast cancer awareness luncheon. One of the sponsors distributed honey, and as a special thank-you, the chapter president set aside a large bag full of honey-bear bottles for me to take home.

By this time I found the entire honey episode rather amusing. The next morning, during my devotions, I read that honey is a symbol of God’s blessing and abundance. After months of grieving the death of my son, it was as if God had placed His loving arms around me and promised me blessings beyond measure.

Lord, the reminders of Your love are all around me. May I remember to share them with others so they, too, can taste and see that You are good.
