Devotionals and the Realities of Life

Make your daily devotionals more productive by looking at the realities of your everyday life.

Daily Devotionals for the First Year of Motherhood

I recently edited a book for new moms, Daily Guideposts: Your First Year of Motherhood.

It was fascinating to work with 20 wise and witty women (and one dad) writing about the intersection of faith and new parenthood. Because new moms are short on time, each piece had to be brief. Because the first year ricochets between overwhelming joy and intense insecurity, the topic coverage had to be emotionally diverse. And because sleep-deprived minds don't always see what God has put there to see, the book needed to be rich in honest, been-there-done-that insight.

All of which is to say that when you ponder how to make your devotions more fertile, it helps to look at the realities of your life as it is now. The tools that will help you grow closer to God depend on how busy you are, how much self-discipline you can muster, the degree of control you have over your schedule and what lifts your heart to God.

Here are two questions to help you think things through:

  • Which is harder at the moment: digging deep in prayer, or keeping God in mind continually?
  • And what’s really standing in the way of letting you make progress in either?
