Lord, Open My Eyes to Angels

This Daily Guideposts classic features angelic inspiration to hone your spiritual insight.

Angel Encounters and Sightings

“Lord, let our eyes be opened.”—Matthew 20:33 (RSV)

Just last week I gave a talk on creativity, urging the audience to open their eyes and to hone their insights. “Creative people can recognize repeating patterns and see similarities among things,” I said knowingly.

So much for being the expert. This morning, for the first time ever, I recognized a home-décor pattern that was utterly unintentional. Inside my front door hangs a round, rust-colored plate featuring a golden angel trumpeter. On the kitchen doorframe is a white-china angel holding a harp. Above the light switch in my office, I’ve put a mauve-and-teal angel plucking a lute. And on a nail just inside my bedroom, there’s an angelic horn player, maybe Michael, molded from plaster.

I’d put up these angels ages ago, without making the connection that all serve as doorway guards, minding my room-to-room comings and goings. And all four are musicians, poised to fill my home with heavenly chords.

The day is young. What other creative insights—angelic or otherwise—does the Lord have in store for this “expert”?

Lord, open my eyes to new creative insights that enrich my spiritual life.
