What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31 (NIV)

My husband took a sip of coffee and turned away from the sermon he was watching on his laptop. “Hey, honey, do you know what command is used the most in the Bible?”

“‘Love’?”

“That’s what I thought too. But nope.”

“‘Obedience’?”

He shook his head. “‘Fear not.’”

“Really?” I had no idea. But how very apt, especially since a God-sized opportunity had landed in my lap, one that was every bit as terrifying as it was amazing.

I had the chance to travel to Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo. We’re adopting from the DRC and had recently accepted a referral for a young child there.

I had the opportunity to go, yet fear was holding me back. I was afraid of stretching ourselves financially. I was afraid that I’d take this precious child in my arms and fall that much more in love, only to discover that we couldn’t adopt her. I was afraid for my safety, since there were warnings advising against traveling to Kinshasa.

Yet I knew this opportunity was straight from God, that He had been calling me to do something with all I had learned regarding the plight of the orphan. So who would I listen to: God’s voice or my fear?

Thank You, Jesus, that when You are on our side, we have nothing to fear!
