Find Purpose in Your Mistakes

For the past twenty-three years…the Lord has been giving me his messages. I have faithfully passed them on to you, but you have not listened.” Jeremiah 25:3 (NLT)

I’ve had a couple of Jeremiah days this week. You know, those days when everything you do seems destined for failure?

Take today, for instance. It started out great. I dropped my kids off at school and made it to the grocery-store checkout lane in record time. Then as I watched the items drop into the bags, I opened my purse…and remembered that my wallet was at home in yesterday’s Bible-study tote. No wallet, no groceries, which meant a trip back home and a serious loss of time.

I can’t stand wasting time. Resting, I like. But wasting time I can’t afford is a tough pill to swallow. Not only that, but it irks me to feel yet again that my brain isn’t what it used to be. However, I believe the Holy Spirit had begun whispering to me even before I discovered my goof. Although I felt disappointed, deep in my spirit I was calm. Calm!

As I re-drove the round-trip to the store, wallet in hand, I asked Jesus to show me some purpose in my mistake, some way He could redeem the loss of time. You know what? He immediately reminded me of this half-written devotion about days full of failures. At that point it was a mish-mash of thoughts, but this flub and the victory of a calm spirit provided the wrap-up I needed to bring this writing to completion.

I had been praying for a sweetening of my spirit in the midst of busyness—and true to Himself, Jesus showed that His power is perfect (and purposeful) in my weakness. (See 2 Corinthians 12:9.)

Hallelujah for Jeremiah days that reveal Jesus at work despite our limitations! (See Romans 8:28.)
