Unusual Ways God Comforts Us

A woman finds an unlikely source of hope in this excerpt from Guideposts Daily Planner 2016.

Unusual Ways God Comforts Us

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. —Romans 5:1 (ESV)

My husband and I were tempted to throw the tiny blue and gold grandfather clock out with the trash. It wouldn’t keep the right time. In spite of all the careful adjustments made on the delicate two-inch pendulum and the meticulous balancing of the little weight fastened to its stem, the timepiece ticked off the minutes as though it couldn’t wait  for tomorrow.

And then my husband became seriously ill. His hospitalization lasted many weeks, and for a while it seemed that he might never come home.

At first, the loneliness of my days was unbearable. While I waited, praying desperately for God’s help, the little clock continued to tick gaily along. It seemed to be racing ahead, singing out, “It won’t be long! He’ll soon be home! It won’t be long!”

As I prayed, the sound comforted me and gave me courage. My husband recovered and is home again. The willful little clock still doesn’t keep time. However, I wind it regularly, for the sound of its ticking has become a source of hope for me and a reminder that God, Who is never far away, sometimes uses strange devices to  comfort us.
