New Beginnings

Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles.—PSALM 119:50 (NLT)

My grandfather loved to make people laugh and was always the life of the party, while my grandmother was the listener, always ready to sit with you and hear your heart. After my grandfather died, I moved into my grandmother’s home with her as her health no longer allowed her to live on her own.

Her grief and loneliness at the loss of my grandfather were immense. Her health kept her in bed much of the time. I worried about what I could offer that would help revive her ability to carry on without him.

When football season started, I suggested we try watching a game together. She had never been much for sports, but unexpectedly she enjoyed watching the games with me. She surprised me by asking questions about the plays. She didn’t know any of the football terms, but she quickly grasped the basics of the game. I was amazed and delighted when she began to root for her favorite team, cheering them on from her bed!

Lord, thank you for your restorative grace and the gift of new beginnings in the face of loss.
