Words from Scripture as Devotional Tool

Sometimes tracing a single word through Scripture provides a fresh perspective in your daily devotions.

I’m a morning person: I like the quiet, early hours, when no one else in the family is up.

At this time of year, I’m doubly keen about morning because it’s light outside when I awake. Sunshine is a devotional tool: It helps me see God at work more easily.

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light,” I recently whispered at the glittering Hudson River as I stretched and smiled at the day. (Isaiah 9:2)

I ground beans for coffee, and thought of a different passage: “Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.” (Isaiah 60:3) And since my heart felt especially bright, when I sat down to write I pulled up Bible Gateway on my computer and did a search on light.

Sometimes tracing a single word through Scripture—light, bread, water, hope, joy, peace—provides a fresh perspective. It allows us to make connections between the Old Testament and the New, and to rediscover passages we’ve forgotten about.

This morning my heart settled on Psalm 136 to bask in at the start of a spring day:

[He] who made the great lights—
            His love endures forever.
the sun to govern the day,
            His love endures forever.
the moon and stars to govern the night;
            His love endures forever.
